History/ Story of Vaishno Devi:

According to Hindu religion, in the Treta yuga, when there was an outbreak of tyrannical rule of evil and demons on earth, the goddess Vaishnavi was created, when Mata Gauri, Mata Lakshmi and Mata Saraswati decided to combine their energies to rid the earth of impending doom. By the collecting energy of the three goddess, created an eight armed goddess, who was riding upon a lion. After destroying the demons living on the earth, the goddess Vaishnavi was requested to dwell on mother earth, so that she could keep away all evil from forever.
She chooses to incarnate as a human. As a child Vaishnavi was immersed in devotional service to the lord Vishnu, a habit she carried well into her adulthood. When she was of marriageable age, she left home to perform intense penance to please and win lord Vishnu as her husband.
Years passed, and as a response to her prayers, lord Vishnu appeared to her as lord Rama. She finds out that he was already married and was searching for his wife, sita, who was abducted by the demon King the Ravana of Lanka. seeing his devotee distraught, Lord Rama promised her that he would return to her one day, and if she recognised him, she could marry him. Lord Rama moved to save Sita and become the king of Ayodhya while Vaishnavi was waiting for his return.

One such day, he (Lord Rama) who was approached by an old man, who asked Sundar Vaishnavi to become his wife. she however, declined his offer considering it undesirable for her age and looks. She failed to recognise the old man, who was none other than the Lord Rama, who had come to fulfill his promise. However the harsh penance of the Goddess could remains incomplete, so lord Rama granted her the boon that in the 10th incarnation of lord Kalki during the period of Kalyuga, he would marry her and asked her to wait till his 10th Avatar(incarnation) on Trikuta mountain. He even gave her a bow and two quivers and a troop of his monkey.
Lord Rama gave up, and Vaishnavi spent years meditating, moving from one place to another solving everyone's trouble with her accomplishment. This jeopardized, the popularity of local tantrik who sent his desciple Bhairo Nath to find out more about her. But he was stunned by her beauty and lustfully stalked her where ever she went.
To avoid his unwanted attention Vaishnavi enters a cave and continues her meditation there, for nine months, as a child rests in the mother's womb. When Bhairo Nath discovered her hiding place and attempted to hunt her again with the intention of forcing himself upon her, Vaishnavi appeared as the goddess ‘Mahakali’ and severed Bhairo Nath's head with her sword.

After cutting off his head, Bhairo Nath realises his mistake and begs her for forgiveness. His head had fallen down far away from the body, but the most merciful goddess Vaishno devi promised him that she would be displaced there forever and that he would be her guardian from.
Vaishno Devi gave him wrath and returned  to the form of Vaishnavi, and reentered her cave, where she took the form of three rocks and lives there to this day.
